Public Services

Despite its small size, Fort Gaines has a whole range of public services available to citizens and visitors alike.

Economic Development
Fort Gaines and Clay County have a joint nine-person Economic Development Coucil which meets monthly to deal with local economic issues. This Website is a result of recent EDC efforts.

  • Chairman: Ken Penuel
  • Vice Chairman: Bill Kenyon
  • Treasurer: Jean Turn
  • Meetings - First Monday of each month, noon, Bagby Park and Lodge

Emergency Medical Services
Fort Gaines EMS has two ambulances always at ready, and one in reserve. A mutual aid agreement with surrounding counties means additional support is always available. Please call 911 for emergencies.

Extension Service
Fort Gaines and Clay County boast one of the most reputable Extension Service departments in this area of Georgia. As an affiliate of the University of Georgia system, the Extension Service provides for the county 4-H program and local Extension Agents.

Fire Department
Fort Gaines and Bluffton, the only other incorporated town in Clay County, work together to provide fire protection to county residents. A joint volunteer fire department uses three fire department buildings, including a main building in Fort Gaines, one at Day's Crossroads north of town, and one in Bluffton. Two fire trucks and three forestry unit trucks serve the county. Since the chief fire threat in the county comes from the surrounding timberland, the State Forestry Commission has a fire tower in Clay County, manned by a county-employed tower operator.

Garbage Service
Clay County provides door-to-door pick-up in all areas of the county.

Law Enforcement
Local law enforcement is provided by the county sheriff's department and the city-operated police department.

Neighborhood Service Center
The Clay County Neighborhood Service Center provides a gathering place for the elderly. An organization called the Enrichment Services Program (ESP) manages activities for the elderly, ranging from arts and crafts workshops to personal financial assistance.

Public Health Services
The county Health Department serves as the primary health care facility in the area. A doctor visits the facility on a rotating basis.

Public Transportation
Clay County operates a rural public transport system, called Clay Transit. The system provides four 12-15 passenger vans, two equipped with a wheelchair lift, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
